FLOOD alleviation work proved its worth over the weekend with the Cotswolds escaping the worst of the flooding chaos.

Part of Moreton’s high street between Swan Close and the Swan Inn flooded early on Friday morning but there were no reports of damage to properties.

Moreton Town councillor Ruth Winder, chairman of the town’s resilience committee, told members at Monday night’s meeting, that water from the flood relief ditch had flooded gardens in Fosseway Avenue.

“The water levels were very high. I’m not aware there were any properties flooded,” she said.

Cllr Rod Hooper praised the efforts of her husband who cleaned out the flood relief ditch but called on more people to do the same.

“I think if residents would clean drains in the road outside their properties it would save a lot of problems,” he said. “There was definitely a lot of water coming down Parker’s Lane.”

Cllr Robert Dutton, Moreton ward member on Cotswold District Council, said the town had “got away very lightly”.

Members also agreed to pledge a further £2,500 towards a £450,000 culvert to divert flood water away from the town and into the Stow brook.

This brings their total funding to £20,000 after setting aside £10,000 from the 2014/2015 precept along with £7,500 pledged last year.

Meanwhile Shipston escaped relatively unscathed.
