A NEW scheme aimed at encouraging secondary school pupils to learn more about their heritage has been launched by the Blockley Heritage Society and Blockley Educational Trust.
The scheme adds an extra dimension to the work of the Blockley Educational Trust which has for many years assisted young people in the parish to engage in educational activities – especially where they might not be able to afford it.
The scheme also reflects the commitment of Blockley Heritage Society to pass on information on heritage matters to the wider community.
The first student to be accepted for the Blockley Educational Trust Heritage Awards scheme is Ed Sandars, from Chipping Campden School.
The 16-year-old, who lives in Blockley, proposed a project focussing on the impact of the First World War on the village community.
Robert Willott, chairman of Blockley Heritage Society, said: “We are delighted that Ed has taken up this challenge.
"There is so much that a knowledge of our heritage and the experiences of our ancestors can teach the younger generation about how to live today.”
The findings from the project will be displayed at the Blockley Heritage Centre and retained in the Society’s archive.
It is also likely that the display will form part of an exhibition being prepared to accompany the village’s First World War commemorative event on November 1.
