A MAN who murdered his 11-month-old baby by shaking him violently and causing him serious head injuries has been jailed for life.

Shane Hawkins, aged 25, of Blackwell Road, Tredington, near Shipston, denied murdering his son Kaydon, who died in hospital in 2010 a few days after being hurt at a house in Bodmin, Cornwall.

Haemorrhaging in the child’s eyes was consistent with being shaken violently, Truro Crown Court heard.

Hawkins was told he would serve at least 14 years.

Kaydon was taken to the Royal Cornwall Hospital but was transferred to Bristol Children’s Hospital where he died three days later.

Jurors were told Hawkins claimed the baby’s head was injured when he dropped him from about 3ft (90cm) on to a storage heater.

After Hawkins was convicted, Devon and Cornwall Police said he carried out a “violent act committed against a defenceless baby”.
