LITTLE Rissington has been named as the snowiest place in the country this year.

According to Met Office reports yesterday, the village near Bourton has had 30cm of snow recorded so far, 3cms more than Aboyne, in Aberdeenshire and 17cm more than Bingley, West Yorkshire.

Councillor David Harrison, chairman of Upper Rissington Parish Council, said the village had managed to cope despite the heavy snow fall.

“Apart from the big snowfall on Friday (18) which stopped people moving that day it’s not the worse this village has seen by a long way.

“We certainly had a lot more snow than we were expecting on Tuesday (22). I think a lot of people we surprised by how much we have got.

“The farmer’s snow plough was round the village at 1am. Fair play to him he cleared most of the roads.

“We’ve got some grit bins around the village. We could do with a few more.

“With our slightly raised altitude - the highest part of the village is 240m - where somewhere else is getting rain we might be getting snow.”

Thirty-three highways teams have been out gritting across Gloucestershire in the last week and will continue in the coming days, even as the Met Office predicts an end to the heavy snow that hit the county in the past week.
