A new yacht club is sailing to Chipping Norton
DESPITE being perched on one of the highest points in Oxfordshire and located more than 100 miles from the sea, Chipping Norton will soon have its own yacht club.
Residents who have a keen interest in sailing and boats can become a member of the Chipping Norton Yacht Club (CNYC), which is set to launch later this month.
More than 100 people have already shown interest in joining the club, which will meet every last Wednesday of the month, starting on January 30, at the Chipping Norton Golf Club, London Road.
“We may be on a hill miles from the sea, lack moorings, have no dinghy park or river frontage but in the Cotswolds there are hundreds of people with a keen interest in boats and sailing.” said Trevor Taylor, club founder.
“There are a number of us who know each other and sail and have been saying for some time it would be nice to get people together.
“Our boat was tied up in Greece and we realised that the people tied up alongside us live down the road. We had no idea they were so close and they sailed as well.”
Mr Taylor, who has been sailing since the 1970s, said he hoped the club would give the Cotswold sailing community the chance to get together, share experiences, hear interesting speakers and even find crew.
“Part of the proposal of the yacht club is to bring together all the people interested in sailing,” he said.
“You don’t have to have a boat to join the club.
“We aim to make the club an essential port of call for everyone in the Cotswolds with an interest in boating.”
A special inaugural dinner at 7.30pm will kick off the first meeting and will follow a short welcome and introduction.
