COMMENT - Regal keeps on getting it exactly right

WE feel quite a bit of affinity with the Regal Cinema.

We are both long-standing businesses, pride ourselves as being at the heart of the town, provide entertainment (along with our primary news and information service), and both have had a bit of a make-over recently.

OK, the Regal’s make-over cost a tad more than our refreshed design, but you get the point.

We as a newspaper have changed to keep up with changing demands from our customers, and that’s what the regal has done.

So we are delighted that the cinema is reporting excellent audience figures since its grand reopening six months ago.

The management at the cinema certainly seem to be full of ideas – such as the planned concerts by the likes of Charlotte Church or Toploader (now that would make an interesting duet).

More than 50,000 people through the doors in six months is quite an achievement. Being shortlisted for a ‘heritage rescue’ award is another.

Actually, that’s the bit we really like.

The Regal has shown that traditional entertainment, but done in an updated and modernised way, can still work very well and continue to stave off the gloomy predictions that none of us would ever move off the sofa away from the TV and DVD again.
