M&S ‘contempt’

HAVING abandoned Evesham as soon as the economic going got tough M&S are now trying to sleaze their way back in.

Not in the town centre where they would form a useful keynote store to draw shoppers into the town, but out on Worcester Road where they will take shoppers away and contribute to the further decline of the town centre.

With so much time, effort and money being spent on saving Evesham town centre and the High Street, it is not the time for M&S to make their contribution to doughnutting the town.

They have been offered sites in the town but their only interest seems to be in their profit margins.

The recent so-called ‘consultation’ was a transparent and cynical attempt to manipulate public opinion and put pressure on Wychavon District Council and Evesham Town Council to abandon their sensible policies of putting the High Street first and instead favour M&S and its stooges.

If M&S really care about the future of Evesham, as their property director claims, then they will site themselves in the centre (the old Argos store would be ideal but there are plenty of other suitable locations) or at least make a substantial cash donation to the redevelopment of the High Street to offset the damage they are about to do. Anything else would be clear evidence of the contempt in which they hold the people of Evesham.

Alexander Cochrane, Evesham
