One of the letters on your letters page once intimated that there was not much point in writing to an MP or letters written in protest as in the Long Marston proposed Eco Town, as one would only receive a stereotyped reply acknowledging your letter and not much more.
I’ve only had occasion to write to three MP’s, one of which was to Margaret Beckett which elicited nothing. The first was to the late Gerald Nabarro, 36 years ago, when I had a legal problem which I had no idea how to resolve. He wrote telling me exactly what to do which I did and to my great relief my problem was solved. The second was to Peter Luff from whom I received a very far from stereotyped reply. Yes, a secretary would probably have typed it but the wording was all his own. He answered every point I’d made making me feel it was well worth while having written to him. He’d listened to what I’d said and I wrote to thank him and he even answered that putting over one more point of view. I think he does striving work for the community.
