THE letters column two weeks ago contained a letter from Colin Tether, in which he pointed out that a county council website, only taken down after September 2014, had clearly shown the provision of a cycle lane on the Evesham Abbey Road bridge.

Mr Tether quoted directly from the executive summary to prove his point, and bemoaned the fact that the county council then forgot all about providing said cycle path. Indeed he urged that if any of the bridge delay fine ever sees the light of day it could be used to put in this much needed safety feature.

Colin Tether is one of those splendid people who work tirelessly through the Civic Society to try to improve the lives of all of us who live in Evesham.

What response did his letter get from our well paid senior county officers or our equally well remunerated elected councillors? A thundering silence! No reply, no explanation.

It simply is not good enough for officers and councillors to ignore the views of any of us. To treat Colin Tether in this way, a man who in a voluntary and unpaid capacity puts in hours a week to try to make Evesham a better and safer place is deeply insulting. Surely Councillor John Smith, the county council member with responsibility for highways, could use the letters page of this newspaper to answer the points made by Mr Tether. Failure to do so only increases the belief that county council officers and members do not consider the views of others important, a very bad state of affairs indeed.
