NEW houses off Station Road, Pershore are to be welcomed (Journal, February 12). But they need infrastructure.

The current road is at least 60 years old, built for a time with few cars, no continental articulated trucks and no business parks or large school. It is already inadequate.

The new homes will increase the population by some 25 per cent, at least double that of 50 years ago.

The long-mooted relief road which would divert traffic from M5 junction seven before traffic enters the town is essential. It will also save the High Street from heavy traffic.

But the developer does not want to allow any such road, not now, not ever. Wychavon District Council is minded to agree!

By so doing our happy band of councillors show total lack of regard for all those in the town whose interests they are supposed to uphold.

Interest such as safety on roads – especially for the hundreds of children who use the road twice daily – interests such as freedom from congestion, traffic fumes or ease of access to/from our homes.

One might hope that the traffic authority would look after our interests. Whoops! No! This is the same authority whose ineptitude produced a shambolic one-way system in Evesham and which oversaw the disgraceful mismanagement of Abbey Bridge.

So I don't think our elected representatives are going to look after us. It is down to us. Write, write and write again to your councillor and MP. Add your comments to the planning documents (W/14?02743/RM).

If you felt strongly about Pershore's coffee shops, how much more strongly should you feel about this.
