AN article in the Journal (January 1) concerning speeding fines referred to a 70mph stretch of the A46 Sedgeberrow bypass.
The national speed limit for single carriageways in the UK is 60mph.
If an article is worth writing it is also important to get the facts right. It is precisely this type of article which confuses many people.
Over recent years there is undoubtedly a proliferation of 50mph limits on very many A class roads, and often it is the case if you turn off these roads and onto a narrower B class road the speed limit goes up to 60mph. Crazy!
I am not aware of any statistical information which states that lowering speed limits on A roads from 60mph to 50mph actually reduces accidents.
I am sure that at a time of severe cutbacks, a considerable amount of money could be saved by not having to put up additional de-restriction signs all over the place, and just stick to the norms as designated in the Highway Code.
