REGARDING Scott Withey's letter of November 20, a few years ago I was told – and I'm sure someone will quickly correct me if I am wrong – that the company that owns the Riverside Centre has insurance against units being empty.

This would mean that the owners won't be concerned as to the centre remaining less than half full, or indeed completely empty, because they will benefit one way or the other. Meanwhile, the town suffers with the downward spiral of people not coming into Evesham because there are not many shops from which to buy, and shops not opening because the footfall is so low.

Is there any way that the council could discuss this situation with the centre owners, and persuade them to lower the rents, which are relatively high, and offer other incentives to bring retailers and customers back into the centre?

National chains of retailers will not pay the high rents on such small units because it is not economically viable.

Isn't that why M&S finally left?
