SOME councillors would like the residents of Evesham to put the troubled history of the Abbey Bridge replacement project behind us and take a pride in the finished article.

I am afraid I cannot.

First of all, it is not aesthetically pleasing as the bridge deck below the main arch, unlike its predecessor, is non-symmetric and has a curious upswing at the northern end.

The old bridge at least had some finials to soften its functionality, this one has nothing. The finish also leaves a lot to be desired.

One might expect to be able to run ones hand along the top of a handrail' try that on Abbey Bridge and you frequently encounter sets of four raised bolt heads.

There are also frequent gaps in the handrails with edges that are not particularly smooth, and at corners the gaps are atrocious, ideal sites for little fingers to get trapped.

No, sir, the design and workmanship of this bridge leave an awful lot to be desired, Evesham has not been served well by Worcestershire County Council.
