I HAVE some sympathy with those who wrote to the Journal about speeding through Pershore High Street.

But at least Pershore residents can get across cross the road. In Evesham we are not so lucky.

In Pershore there are six crossing places over High Street and Bridge Street.

In Evesham, along Vine Street and High Street – roughly the same length – we just have three crossings.

Worst of all there are no crossings between Swan Lane and Worcester Road.

This quarter-of-a-mile section of road has four schools close by, a station, bus stops, shops, cafes, restaurants, post office, solicitors, accountants, dentists and many other businesses.

It is really difficult crossing the wide High Street.

Pedestrians are seen waiting for very long periods in the pouring rain as endless columns of cars go by.

It was not always like this. There used to be two useful traffic islands, but these were swept away with the “High Street enhancement” to make way for the wrong-way round angled parking spaces nobody likes and many will not use.

A petition signed by 1,000 local residents failed to influence any change and we are left with a wholly unsatisfactory situation.

In Evesham High Street, the car is king and pedestrians are the paupers.

So Pershore, count your blessings. You have a 20mph zone, you can park easily and you can cross the road. It cannot be too bad!
