DESPITE numerous objections to the proposed increase in parking restrictions near Prince Henry’s High School in Victoria Avenue, the extra yellow lines were introduced yesterday.

This however has not solved the problem of traffic chaos which occurs at school starting and finishing times as I have just seen (February 24, 4.15pm).

I write this having just witnessed a complete standstill of cars and buses from one end of Victoria Avenue to the other that extended around the corner into Greenhill.

The bus drivers actually had to leave their vehicles to discuss how to get out of the impasse!

The real problem is the number of buses and cars trying to enter and leave a road that was never designed for such large vehicles and the fact is that the road is actually starting to collapse in places.

A much more imaginative approach is required.

Is it really necessary for buses to actually stop outside the Prince Henry High School?

Surely it is possible for the school students to walk to the end of Victoria Avenue and a little way up the hill where there is a purpose built bus stop with a lay-by.

Those responsible for traffic management would perhaps do better by getting out and about and collecting empirical evidence rather than applying kneejerk reactions such as painting a few yellow lines (thus infuriating local residents hard pushed to park anywhere near their houses as it is).

Why don’t they come along one school day and watch the chaos evolve as several dozen buses and cars try to enter and leave Victoria Avenue and then perhaps some sort of rational solution can be sought.
