Moreton-in-Marsh and District Local History Society

THIRTY eight members attended the May meeting of the society.

The History of Lawrence Washington, Lord of the Manor of Sulgrave and Sturchbury, was acted by Martin Sirot Smith, in Tudor costume. He recounted how the family came from Lancashire, and became wool merchants at Sulgrave, following their cousins the Spencers’ example of clearing farmland and villages to make grazing for flocks, and amassing great fortunes. Hence the title of the talk – Sheep that Ate Men, the Ethnic Cleansing of the Tudor Times. Robert Washington emigrated from Sulgrave to America and thence began the Washington Dynasty.
