IN his first meeting as President of our Club, George Bourne proudly declared the meeting on Thursday, 1 March open.

Our planned speaker for this week was unable to attend, so into the breach stepped our own indefatigable Grenville Burrows with a splendid quiz.

Split into small teams, members answered Grenville’s questions enthusiastically, albeit with varying degrees of accuracy. For example, some failed to recognise a photo of Evesham’s Town Hall, and one wag thought the name of the Roman road running from Exeter to Lincoln was the A46 rather than the Fosse Way.

However, everyone enjoyed the intellectual challenge enormously and Alan Smith and David Beckley ran out the eventual winners. Their prize was a box of exquisitely stuffed prunes from Agen, one of the tastiest treats from France.

Subsequently and our amusement we learned that one of our chaps had walked off, inadvertently, with someone else’s jacket. He returned to the Boathouse, where we meet, and found his own jacket where he had left it. Meanwhile, another member had mislaid his jacket but, mysteriously, it proved not to be the one that the first member had lifted! Oh what joy it is to be absent minded.

Then on Friday, 2 March, thirteen of our members with wives and partners enjoyed a Fish & Fizz lunch at the Evesham Hotel. The food was excellent, the service superb and a good time was had by all. Thank you Evesham Hotel.

You’ll find lots of information about our Club, including our programme of forthcoming speakers, on our website at: www.eveshamprobus.co.uk.

Do join us.
