WE had a very interesting evening this month when Heather Greengaugh came to speak to us about her experiences as a teacher of Social and Life Skills in HMP Long Lartin. Her career had been in education for people with special needs, and deciding that she would like to try something different, applied for the post of prison tutor. Heather enjoyed her time “inside”. As one of the eight high security prisons, the men there were either murders or terrorists, but treated her with respect as they regarded her as “the little old lady”! We were entertained with many amusing anecdotes about her work there, such as the man who told her “If my wife had been faithful I wouldn't have killed her.”! Most of the men were keen to learn and gaining a certificate was good for their self-esteem. Audrey Whitehouse gave the vote of thanks.

Our usual supper break followed, giving everyone an opportunity to socialise and look at the competition entries, sales table and various notices. Audrey Whitehouse, President, then opened the business meeting with a special welcome to our new members and visitors. As we have several people join this year she gave a short explanation about the WI and the various activities within it. Angela Bilboe gave details of the next craft evening on February 23 at The White Horse and Pam Rayner gave out the dates of the skittles matches for the coming months.

Our centenary celebrations are still ongoing with a visit to the National Memorial Arboretum at Lichfield in June booked and other outings to be discussed.

The winners of the competition for this month were as follows first Jean Barton, second Christine Daley and third Janette Dowling. Our next meeting is on March 9 in Wulstan Hall Priest Lane. The meeting starts at 7.30pm and as always new members are very welcome.
