PRESIDENT Brian Melville warmly welcomed Club members, wives, partners and guests to our annual lunch at the Kings Court Hotel, Alcester on November 12, which we all thoroughly enjoyed.

As ever, the hotel staff looked after us very well and some of us thought the apple sauce and custard was exceptional. We didn’t have it together you understand, there was other stuff with it, separately of course, but we did enjoy the sauce and the custard!

Throughout the event there were animated exchanges of conversation, as well as a great deal of laughter and leg-pulling, with many ladies finding out more of what goes on during Thursday mornings! The only pregnant pause was when an unusually sartorially elegant gentleman returned to the dining room after a breath of fresh air, to the cry of ‘Speech’ by some nameless wag.

In his toast to the Probus Club of Evesham, the President of the Broadway club, Gerald O’Brien, referred to the long standing association between the two clubs. He recalled that the Evesham club had been instrumental in setting up the Broadway club.

Brian Ireland proposed the toast to the ladies with an eloquently fitting quotation which was responded to equally gracefully by Jill Armstrong.

On November 19 we shall hear about the wonder of tea followed on November 26 by our own version of Question Time, when we shall have the opportunity to grill George Bourne, Tony Davies, Steve Swarbrick and Bob Young on topics of our choosing.
