OVER 120 visitors flocked to Bishampton’s annual Summer Show at the Villages Hall last Saturday (15 August) to see the extravaganza of exhibits on show in 74 classes.

Displays ranged from a colourful array of flowers and carefully nurtured vegetables to hand-knitted garments and drawings; from delicious jams and chutneys to examples of nifty camera work; from cakes to beautifully crafted three dimensional handiwork, all rounded off with a variety of children’s entries. In all there were over 300 entries. Volunteers serving refreshments were kept busy serving tea and cakes the whole afternoon and the whole hall was buzzing with activity from 2pm through to 4pm.

For the first time this year, Wychavon Roadshow set up their stalls in the adjacent field offering lots of free family fun, including a climbing wall, circus skills and health checks which proved very popular with children and adults alike.

Chairman Pete Chamberlain defended his championship valiantly yet again, and was also awarded the RHS Banksian medal for the most points in Show.

First prize for The Top Tray and Top Vase categories sponsored by Gardening News magazine were awarded to Rob Perry and Pete Chamberlain respectively. Show trophies were awarded as follows:-

The Greengrow Trophy (highest number of points): Pete Chamberlain; The Chairman’s Challenge Cup (Second highest): Rob Perry (closely followed by Rosemary Rickard); The Hiller Challenge Cup (Flowers): Rosemary Rickard; The P.J.Nicholls Challenge Cup (Vegetables): Rob Perry; The Committee Trophy (Pot Plants): Pete Chamberlain; The Maggie Chamberlain Trophy (Floral Art): Chrissie Rushworth; The Treasurer’s Trophy ((Fruit): Pete Chamberlain; The Bishampton Stores Challenge Cup (Home Produce): Sue Ellis; The Four Acres Challenge Cup (tallest Sunflower): Charlotte Perry; The Bevington Challenge Cup (Longest Runner Bean): Freddie Martin; The Country Cakes Challenge Cup (Photography): Tim Goodwin; The Village Craft Trophy: David Miller.

The organisers were delighted with the take-up for the Show declaring it the best they had ever had.

The Club’s next event is on Wednesday, September 2, when Sue Dodd and Sue Smith will be talking about attracting butterflies and moths to gardens.
