Probus Club of Evesham

WE were pleased this week to hear from Cyril Harrison, honorary life member, and members asked that he be sent their very best wishes. We were also sorry to hear that Cliff Blackborrow is still in hospital. President Brian Melville then attempted a rant of the week about a magazine aimed at us oldies, but being such a quiet, studious sort of chap, it was more a gentle grumble rather than a rant!

We were then organised into groups of five ready for our annual quiz arranged by Grenville Burrows. The questions covered a wide variety of topics, from culture through to sport, and from last year to several centuries ago. For most of us it was as difficult as University Challenge although there are clearly some with big brains amongst us. As ever with these sorts of quiz, it’s all very well having the answers in the back of your head, but no use at all if you can’t recall them! Anyway, after an hour, the winning Egghead team of Clive Allen, Bill Birch, John Cotton, Nige Jenkins and David Lee emerged victorious. Well done them!

Grenville was congratulated for making this challenge once again so enjoyable. It was very noticeable that there was a great deal of laughter and animated discussion amidst all the head-scratching.

On April 23, we shall hear about Defford from Bob Shaw and on April 30, Brigadier Ian Shapter will present the exploits of the English archer and his longbow at Poitiers.
