WE had a good turnout at our meeting on Thursday, February 12 and welcomed back David Way after a short absence and extended our best wishes to Ron Tarry.
Our speaker this week was fellow member Nigel Jenkins. He confessed to be somewhat nervous about speaking publicly although straightaway he captured our attention with his relaxed, open and humorous delivery.
He began by describing his early life in Norfolk and despite not being an outstanding scholar, his various activities during his schooling years enabled him to make money. This innate business acumen stood him in good stead in the following years when he progressed from owning a few pigs and doing a range of contract work for different farms, to actually making enough to buy his own farm.
He built a large bungalow with a range of outbuildings and poly tunnels as well as digging out a lake. He spoke about the accidents he had been involved in and the different experiences he has had. He outlined his interest in cars, fishing and shooting, and clearly always has an eye for shopping bargains. He also spoke about his travels, on the QE2, on Concorde, to Kenya and to Las Vegas.
Throughout his presentation, he made no reference to any notes and was able to recall the names of individuals and places with ease. It was a superb performance from one of our quieter members and reminded us of the value of farming to the economy.
Our next meetings at Evesham’s Rowing Club Boathouse will be on February 19 when Bill Underwood will speak about ‘Evesham then and now’, followed on February 26 with our AGM. Then on March 5, Paul Hickley will describe ‘operating the Vulcan’.
