THE Isle of Man Roundabout was the title of the talk prepared by our speaker Mrs. Catherine Jones on Tuesday, November 4. Catherine illustrated her talk with scenic views around the Isle whilst giving us an insight into the history of The Isle of Man from the first inhabitants in Neolithic times to present day. Many changes took place over the years. Shipwrecks were common due to the rugged coastline and one ship contained a cargo of sewing machines so they would certainly have been useful to the residents. I always wondered what the Isle of Man symbol meant, well now I know , “ whichever way it is thrown it will stand” a good quiz question. The Isle of Man make their own laws and people can petition and about concerns, and, The House of Keys are obliged to debate and act upon it if necessary.

One famous resident was Norman Wisdom who eventually returned to live on the Island and was very involved with charity work. He had performed at The Gaiety Theatre in 1977 and always desired to return.

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution was founded by Sir William Hilary, who was determined to help the many sailors who got in to difficulty at sea, that was something else I learnt, having always supported them and their work.

Catherine told us about the internees during WW1 who were encouraged in to crafts to give them something to do. During WW2 Port Erin was home to female internees.

A very interesting talk Catherine, my knowledge is always enriched by our great variety of speakers.

Our next meeting will be held at The Civic Centre on Tuesday, December 2 at 2pm, we do not have a speaker planned but will enjoy some home grown entertainment and festive food.
