THIS months meeting again at The Pershore Football Club venue was a talk back in time i.e. The Romans but close to home i.e. Alcester. Alan Godfrey told us how Alcester came to be where it is,on the banks of two rivers the River Arrow and the River Alne also at the junction of The Saltway and Ryknild Street also how it is the best understood Roman Town in the country due to most of the town being built on top of the Roman site.

It was 1540 before early mention of a Roman site and 1920 before archaeology was started. Twenty five years ago a large fire which destroyed a store revealed Roman jewellery and also in the pit of a Roman tannery a leather purse and shoe .

Alan also said that any new buildings are built on slabs of concrete so that any Roman remains are not disturbed. In 2004 Alcester opened its Roman Heritage Centre to display artefacts found over the last 80 years. Alan was thanked for his very interesting talk by Tony Wittenberg. The meeting close after the raffle.

Our next meeting at The Function Room Pershore Football Club Pershore will be on Thursday, November 6 at 7.30pm a Talk by Robin Hill The Real War Horse.
