WHAT interesting information we get by just going to a Probus Club meeting!

At this week's meeting we were given a beautifully illustrated talk by Jim Cooper entitled The Art of Persuasion. He explained that this had nothing to do with the opposite sex, but with advertising, and how with the development of lithography this had grown in use from its early beginnings in the late18th century where the printed illustrations were all in monochrome, to the introduction of full colour posters. These were used to good effect by the railways in their heyday to show attractive places that could be visited by train. The same type of posters were also used to advertise theatrical shows, films, cars, washing powders etc. the list is endless! The initial drawing of these posters required competent artists, many of whom became very well known and in demand. For this and other reasons any poster of this type which is in first class condition can have a high monetary value. If you have one, take great care of it!
