Tennis - Evesham grab first points of campaign

EVESHAM finally gained their first points of the South Warwickshire Summer League season in week four.

They had a close battle with local rivals Pershore before emerging 3-1 victors in the Premier Division.

John Clarke and Andy Crowther (Evesham) squeezed past Mike Langston and Rachel Prudden (Pershore) 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (10-6) in a championship tie-break and then beat Dave Lambert and Dominic Johnson 6-0, 6-2.

Ray Foster-Morison and Chris Francis also just edged out Lambert and Johnson 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 (10-4).

This was before losing to Langston and Prudden 6-4, 6-4.

Champions Stratford-upon- Avon resumed normal service with an emphatic 4-0 win over mid-table Alcester, while Stratford ‘B’ retained second spot despite being held to a 2-2 draw by visitors Shipston-on-Stour.

Sam Wilks and Sam Righton lost to Shipston’s William Welch and Tobias Kemp 7-5, 6-7, 0-1 (4-10) and Ben Lane and Clive Lane 7-5, 6-7, 0-1 (7-10).

The other Stratford pair of Ed Bosley and Richard Monk beat the Lanes 6-1, 6-3 and Welch and Kemp 6-3, 6-1. In Division One, Bidford-on- Avon were held 2-2 by Littleton but stayed top with 12 points.

Chipping Campden beat Studley 3-1 and moved up to equal third spot with Littleton.

Whitnash and Inkberrow wallow at the bottom of the table with only two points apiece.

Division Two saw Claverdon ‘B’ move up from third to joint-top on nine points following a 4-0 win at bottom- placed Littleton ‘B’.

In Division Three, Chipping Campden ‘B’ are second with two straight-set 4-0 wins over Wildmoor Spa and Ilmington.

Shipston-on-Stour ‘B’ dropped to third with 11 points as FISSC held them to a 2-2 draw.

With previous Division Four joint leaders Moretonin- Marsh’s match against HDA Redditch rained off, Inkberrow ‘B’ took full advantage to pull four points clear.

They beat Alcester ‘C’ 4-0 and Snitterfield managed a 2-2 draw at Inkberrow ‘C’ to stay third.

The match between Chipping Campden ‘C’ and Pershore ‘B’ was postponed due to rain.
