A OLYMPIC gold winning athlete will open the doors to Aldi's new store.

The new shop in Moreton opens on Thursday (October 26), with Team GB rower Matt Gotrel, from Chipping Campden on hand to cut the ribbon.

Young sports stars from North Cotswolds Young Cricketers Club will help him before receiving a donation of products from the store, to help the fledgling cricketers stay batting ready.

Olympic gold medal winning rower Mr Gotrel, whose hometown is in nearby Chipping Campden, will meet and greet customers on the morning, before handing out free bags of Aldi’s Super 6 fruit and veg to the first 30 people in the queue.

This comes as part of Aldi’s ‘Get Set to Eat Fresh’ initiative, which aims to get young people and families cooking and eating healthily, in partnership with Team GB.

Aldi store manager Andrew Richardson, said: “The team and I are really looking forward to opening our new store.

"We are dedicated to bringing the Aldi experience to the local community and endeavour to make each and every customer feel very welcome on the opening morning, as well as the weeks and months that lie ahead.

“We are thrilled to be joined by a local Olympic gold medallist, particularly one that’s succeeded in a team sport, as team work is something we are very passionate about at Aldi.”

Mr Gotrel said: “I can’t wait to open the store as I am a big fan of Aldi and to have one on my own doorstep is exciting.

"Fresh produce, such as fruit and vegetables, is intrinsic to my diet and Aldi makes it so easy to eat right with its endless ranges at great prices.

“It’ll be great to be supported by the young cricketers on the day, in particular the North Cotswolds Young Cricketers Club as I actually used to play for them as a child.

"I have always loved sport, even from a very young age so I am passionate about young people having access to different sports in their local community - roll on Thursday.”

Customers will benefit from 107 car parking bays and 1,254 sqm of retail space with the new shop creating 30 new jobs.

The store is currently still recruiting.
