ALPACAS will give a modern twist to an event showcasing the wonders of wool.

The exotic animals join traditional Cotswold sheep at Stow Cotswold Festival on Saturday (July 15).

Festival-goers will be able to get up close and personal to the live animals, prized for their quality fleeces, recreating the bustling sheep markets of the town’s heyday.

The free event celebrates Cotswold life, crafts and heritage in Stow Square from 11am to 11pm.

Weaving, knitting, crocheting, felting and crewel work embroidery will also be demonstrated.

Not to be missed is a display of a flock of more than 100 painted and 3-D pottery sheep money-boxes, created by Stow Primary pupils for the Best Decorated Sheep competition.

A suit specially made for Countryfile presenter and Cotswold Farm Park director Adam Henson, from his own rare breed sheep’s wool, is being exhibited.

Rural crafts and pursuits also feature a dry-stone walling competition, birds of prey handling, beekeeping and willow-weaving.

There is a full live entertainment programme, a market, church tower tours and children’s games.

Dancing to live music starts from 7pm.

The festival is fundraising for Stow Primary School, Kate’s Home Nursing and Great Western Air Ambulance.
