A COTSWOLD council is flush with success after a number public toilets were recognised in the 2016 Loo of the Year competition.

Bourton-on-the-Water is home to two sets of award-winning loos, with the Church Rooms facilities scooping a platinum prize and toilets in Rissington Road taking a gold.

Meanwhile, Cotswold District Council-run conveniences at The Street in Bibury, and the Forum car park in Cirencester, will also receive platinum awards.

West Oxfordshire District Council is set to receive four platinum awards for toilets in Burton High Street, Blackburton Road in Carterton, Back Lane in Eynsham and The Leys in Witney.

Councillor Chris Hancock, the Cotswold’s Cabinet Member for Enterprise and Partnerships, said: "We did very well last year when we won two platinum and two gold awards so moving higher up the Premier Loo League with three platinum awards is a notable achievement.

"I am also pleased that our partner council in West Oxfordshire did so well in gaining four platinums. Together with our three platinums and one gold you could say that we have achieved far beyond a Royal Flush!

“Many local authorities are reducing their provision of public conveniences but we see maintaining – and improving – our facilities as more than a wee priority."

The two neighbouring authorities work in partnership across many functions, and use the same contractor, Healthmatic, to maintain their public conveniences.

Both councils will qualify for a Champions League Standards of Excellence award at this year’s Loo of the Year ceremony, which will take place at St Johns Hotel, Solihull on Friday, December 2.

Cllr Richard Langridge, Cabinet Member for Communities at West Oxfordshire, said: "We welcome many visitors to the Oxfordshire Cotswolds and they - and the residents - expect a high standard of public loos.

"Working with Cotswold we can keep down the costs of many services, including public conveniences – we aren’t flush with money and we must keep a careful watch on how we spend every penny."
