A FREE pot of sweet pea Barry Dare awaits the first 40 visitors to Mill Dene Gardens, in Blockley, when it opens its gates for National Open Garden Day on April 17.

The garden is being opened for free as part of the Royal Horticultural Society National Gardening Week event to inspire people to get gardening.

It is a particularly special occasion this month for Mill Dene owners Barry and Wendy Dare who are celebrating their first opening to the public, 30 years ago.

Also adding to the fun, the producers of the film , A little Chaos, is being premiered on the 17th. It concerns Le Notre, the famous gardener of Versailles, and Kate Winslet, who wants to be his assistant and Mr and Mrs Dare have two for one vouchers to see the film to give away.

Teas will be served by Cotswold Friends, a local charity which provides friendship, support and transport to older and vulnerable people in the north Cotswold community. It aims to combat loneliness and isolation with voluntary services, which improve health and wellbeing and support independent living.

The free event on April 17 runs from 10am to 5pm.

The garden is open at other times from Wednesday to Friday from 10am to 5pm and on Saturdays from 9am to 1pm. Entrance is £7 and £6.50 concessions.
