BRITISH Science Week which runs from March 13 to 22 is being celebrated at a Cotswold school in a series of activities.

Chipping Campden School is kick-starting the event by hosting its third annual Ogden Trust public lecture presented by visiting professor Dr Martin Archer, a space physicist from Imperial College London.

Dr Archer is a science writer and one of the UK’s leading science presenters. He currently writes and presents for James May’s ‘Head Squeeze’, a BBC Worldwide YouTube channel, and is a prominent media spokesperson on breaking science news stories across many media channels.

The science broadcaster is also a well-known DJ, having presented national shows on Kiss FM for six years. His scientific outreach has included inventing the gestural DJ performance dubbed ‘WiiJing’ and the ‘DJ Physics’ stage show in collaboration the Royal Institution of Great Britain.

The DJ Physics Show takes you on a journey into sound with his virtual DJ booth, covering waves, frequency and other basic principles. Whilst spinning the latest tunes he explains the science behind the cueing, beat matching, blending and EQing that goes into his mixes in clubs.

Along the way he’ll make a speaker out of a Styrofoam bowl, turn sound into fire, and guide the audience fearlessly through uncharted frequency space, to discover some surprising connections to seemingly unrelated, cutting-edge physics research.

Head of physics, Jackie Flaherty, said: “We are delighted to welcome such an eminent physicist to show the relevance and importance of the physics that we study in the classroom to such a contemporary and exciting area of the entertainment industry. We extend a warm invitation to members of our local community to come join us for what will be a thought-provoking and inspiring evening.”

The DJ Physics Show is on Monday March 9 from 7pm to 8pm in the school hall and is open to the public. Tickets are free and can be reserved or collected in person from the school reception.
