FIRE and rescue services are urging residents in all districts to keep safe this bonfire night by following a few safety rules.

Major causes of injury are considered to be the misuse of fireworks, using old or illegal ones, failure to handle them properly or keep them in a safe container and the consumption of alcohol.

Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service's deputy fire officer Gary Phillips said: "We know that bonfire night can be an exciting time of year for children, young people and adults alike. Unfortunately year on year, we continue to see people make the same mistakes, which result in property being set alight because bonfires have been built too close to the building or children and adults being hurt in firework related incidents. I really would encourage everyone to attend an organised event."

And John Beard, head of prevention and protection for Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service, said: “If people are putting on their own firework display for friends and family, we’d ask them to make sure they follow the above safety advice and enjoy a responsible and fun evening.

“There is also a real danger around the use of illegal fireworks and it’s important that people realise the huge risks that surround them. It’s much safer, and easier, to visit a local display and let the professionals manage the risks.”
