PEOPLE in Worcestershire suffering with eye disease as a result of diabetes are invited to a support group later this month.

The next meeting of the Worcestershire Diabetic Eye Disease Support Group will be held from 10am until midday on Thursday, October 30 at Worcestershire Royal Hospital’s Diabetes Centre.

The free group will be led by consultant Jasbir Chhina, who will advise patients and their families of the benefits of registering as sight impaired.

Persistent high levels of glucose in the bloodstream of diabetic patients can result in diabetic retinopathy – damage to the retina.

Mrs Chhina said retinopathy is the most common cause of blindness among people of working age in the UK.

“It is important to understand what it is, how it is treated, what can be done to reduce the risk of developing it and what positive actions you can take,” she said.
