THREE dedicated teachers who have nearly a century of teaching experience between them have been honoured with long service awards.

The efforts and commitment of three members of staff – Derek Thomas, Helen Kempson and Jan Paish – at the Cotswold School, in Bourton, were recognised during a special presentation.

Mr Thomas has taught for 38 years in Gloucestershire.

He started at Chipping Campden School in 1976, before moving to Bourton Vale Secondary Modern in 1980 and then the Cotswold School in 1988.

The PE and maths teacher, of Chipping Campden, said: “I’ve seen lots of changes ranging from the flared trousers and kipper ties through to the modern. I’m very proud.”

Mrs Kempson, of Moreton, is retiring in September after joining the school in 1975 as textiles tutor in the DT department.

She said: “I’ve seen the school grow from a very tiny secondary modern to the enormous school it is now. I’m really sad, I shall miss the school hugely.

“It’s been a big part of my life. My husband taught here and my son came here.”

IT teacher Jan Paish, of Bourton, is retiring in August after joining the school in 1980.

She has seen both the school and the world of IT develop greatly over that time.

“I’m very proud,” she said. “My two boys have come through, there have been lots of changes.

“When we first started there were a few BBC computers. It’s changed considerably.”

Speaking at the awards ceremony on July 11, headteacher Will Morgan said the trio had been “integral” to the journey the school has been on.

“They have been key in the culture, the success, the spirit and the ethos that make our school so special,” he said. “We owe you a debt of gratitude.”

“To all three of you I’d like to say a big thank you from myself personally.”
