£20,000 boost for St David's Community Centre

THE campaign to repair Moreton's flood-devastated St David's Community Centre has received a £20,000 cash boost.

The Rotary Club of the North Cotswolds presented St David's Church, which owns the centre, with a £20,000 cheque that will go towards the £630,000 needed to refurbish the building that was deluged by three feet of water in last summer's floods.

The floods damaged walls, floors, toilets and equipment belonging to play groups, the Sunday Club and other organisations that use the venue, which is due to reopen in mid to late September.

A bigger foyer, larger kitchen, replacement main hall roof, new heating system, new toilets, creche, public address system and audio visual system will be among improvements funded by the money, about £580,000 of which had already been raised from insurance, charitable organisations and St David's congregation.

St David's vicar, the Reverend Stephen Wookey, said the parish realised the floods gave it the opportunity to refurbish the rundown centre, which it was already planning to do.

He said: "Every cloud has a silver lining."

Thanking Rotary for the donation, he added: "It's a wonderful, generous gift and we are very, very grateful for it."

The club raised the donation with a grant from its national organisation and through its Three Counties Flood Appeal, which has also given £10,000 to Moreton Play Space, £4,000 to Moreton Voluntary Aid Centre and £500 to Moreton Playgroup.

Club president, Michael Banks, said: "From the outset of our Floods Appeal, North Cotswolds Rotary was determined to help our local community get back on its feet."
