YOUNGSTERS at Swell School have raised £130 for the victims of Typhoon Haiyan, which struck the Philippines in November last year.
Children in years four, five and six have been learning about the disaster that ravaged the central Philippines on November 8 killing more than 3,600 people and leaving about half a million homeless. The children then planned ways to raise money to send to the disaster fund including a nonschool uniform day and a bring and buy toy sale for all the children and their parents.
Youngsters are planning more fundraising events this year. They will include afternoon tea for parents and villagers.
The typhoon was deadliest on record in the Philippines. It killed at least 6,201 people in that country alone.
Haiyan is also the strongest storm recorded at landfall, and unofficially the strongest typhoon ever recorded in terms of wind speed.
