AT our recent meeting, Ray Sturdy gave us a talk on Vesta Tilley. Vesta was born in a poor area of Worcester, the second of thirteen children. Her dad worked on the stage at Worcester theatre and took her along to watch him perform. She was mesmerised at the glamour of it all.She worried her dad to go on stage herself She was so determined that they gave her a chance at Gloucester theatre at the tender age of three and a half. She was such a success her dad became her agent, and got her work in Worcester, London and even the USA. In1910 she earned £100 per week in London and played before the Royal Family. She became better known as Burlington Bertie. She died in 1952 at the age of 88.

Our August outing was to Kew Gardens, London. We enjoyed lovely weather and had five hours to visit the exhibits and gardens covering 326 acres, containing plants and trees from all over the world. An enjoyable day was had by all .

If you would like to join our club, our next meeting is on September 13 at the WI Hall. Please come along.
