SHRUBS, trees and climbers was the topic for the October meeting and the speaker, Dr.L.K. Ferguson, was clearly an expert on this subject having worked at Kew Gardens and travelled widely to see many of the species shown in their natural habitat. We were taken through the seasons with beautiful photographs accompanying Information about the trees, shrubs and climbers at their best in each of the months of the year. There were exotic plants as well as the ones most gardeners would know and included some stunning pictures of white Silver Birches, yellow Witch Hazel against a background of snow, some lovely summer Roses and the dramatic ‘Handkerchief Tree’. Dr. Ferguson described the serious damage done by grey squirrels to many different trees and clearly wanted these squirrels to be treated as pests.
The monthly competition had the title ‘Red is the Colour’ and Dr. Ferguson was very complimentary about the high standard of the arrangements that had been entered. The winner was Jennifer Dawson.
Following questions from the audience an appreciative vote of thanks was given. Chairman, Jonathan Collins, reminded everyone about the AGM and Annual Supper being held at the Three Ways Hotel on November 16 at 7pm.
