JAMES Hitchmough is head of the world’s leading landscape school at Sheffield University and he visited us in February to talk about ‘Perennials in the Urban Landscape’.
A lively and entertaining speaker, James explained how they create perennial meadows from seed and gave examples of the research that is carried out to ensure maximum success. With limited funds available, public spaces have to serve more than one purpose, and a one kilometre storm water garden has been built in the middle of Sheffield, to ease flooding and increase biodiversity. Needless to say, it also looks fantastic.
A members’ seed sowing workshop held at Pershore College was very successful, and two more workshops are planned for later this year.
Our next meeting is on Saturday, March 10 at Crowle Parish Hall, WR7 4AZ, when Glyn Jones will speak about the ‘Gardens of the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust’ at 2pm, following the Group’s AGM at 1.30pm. Glyn is the Trust’s Head of Gardens and is responsible for 50 diverse acres at 5 properties. Visitors are welcome at £3 and there will be a plant sale table, raffle and refreshments.
