TAX, care and toyboys was the subject of our talk on Thursday 6 December. Our guest speaker, Sheila Henderson, began by asking us “Is there any point in making a will?”

And thus she talked us through a variety of issues including inheritance tax, lasting powers of attorney, family trusts, and joint ownership of a house as well as the cost of care, which about one in six of us might need.

She alerted us that the cost of funerals doubles every ten years and described the possible effects of second marriages. At this point one member declared his intention not to die, others decided that one marriage was more than sufficient and sadly I missed the toyboy connection.

By the end of her presentation, we agreed it was beneficial to have a will although what we did to protect ourselves was entirely up to us given that in life nothing can be certain except death and taxes.

Grenville Burrows thanked Sheila for giving us all something to consider.

Our last meeting of 2017 will be on 14 December when with wives, partners and guests we shall enjoy our Christmas Party at the Boathouse.
