On Saturday, October 21, Pershore & District Branch, Royal British Legion, celebrated the 212th Anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar with a dinner at The Oak, Woodmancote, Defford. The evening was opened by the Branch Chairman, Mr Simon Dudfield who gave the traditional Tribute and offered congratulations to Tegan Holloway on her promotion in the Sea Cadet Corps to the rank of Chief Petty Officer, before handing over to Revd. Claire Lording, Branch Padre, who read Nelson’s prayer and then said Grace. After a delicious 3 course meal, the Branch Secretary, Mr Gareth Jenkins, proposed the Loyal Toast which in deference to the Royal Navy was drunk seated. The Secretary then handed over to Lieutenants Stephen Thomas & Glenda McKeown aka Captain Hardy & Vice Admiral Nelson, who proceeded to retell the Battle of Trafalgar as it would be in 2017 with political correctness and health and safety to the fore, much to the amusement of the assembled gathering. Then Lt Stephen Thomas proposed the “Immortal Toast”. Mr Gareth Jenkins then proceeded to tell the diners about the Royal Navy’s daily toast before proposing the new Saturday Night Toast – Our Families. Mr Bob Carr had produced a Trafalgar Quiz which had been running all night and the winners were, not surprisingly, T.S. Scimitar, the Sea Cadet Corps. The formal part of the evening was rounded off by the traditional drawing of the raffle, there is always a raffle, which raised in excess of £60 for the 2017 Branch Poppy Appeal. The Branch Chairman, Mr Simon Dudfield, thanked Simon, the Chef and all the staff at The Oak for an excellent night. The evening ended just before midnight and everyone had a thoroughly enjoyable time.
