100 Years Ago June 13, 1908 ON Tuesday the members of the Great Western Arms, Blockley, Sick and Dividend Society held their annual festival. The club has only been in existence 11 years and has now 177 members. The Blockley Brass Band was engaged and at 1.30pm a procession was formed, headed by their beautiful banner and the band paraded the town. Afterwards they proceeded to the field, pleasantly situated in the middle of the town, where the sports were held. The programme for the sports was all carried out in an excellent manner by the committee. At 6.30pm the prizes were distributed by Major H M Spencer, who said he was pleased to know the club was so well conducted. He was afraid he had not given as much as he ought towards its support but if the club would accept it he would be pleased to double his subscription.

75 Years Ago June 10, 1933 AT a recent meeting of the management committee of the Cotswold Agricultural Society, a suggestion was made that some recognition should be made of the fact that Mr George Freeman, of Sherborne, had been a member of the Society for 60 years. The suggestion was heartily taken up by the chairman (Col, M E G R Wingfield), the president (the Hon S Vestey), Captain Mitford and the whole of the committee with the result that a silver rose bowl has been presented to Mr Freeman with an inscription recording that the bowl has been presented to Mr Freeman by the Cotswold Agricultural Society in recognition of his 60 years' membership and in acknowledgement of the help and support he has always given to the society. Mr Freeman said that the rose bowl will accompany on his sideboard a silver tankard awarded in1842 to his grandfather, George Freeman, of Adlestrop, for the best cultivated farm, by the Stow and Chipping Norton Agricultural Society.

30 Years Ago June 8, 1978 THE Moreton day hospital appeal has raised its target of £15,000 with ample time to spare. The announcement was made by Dr Ian Reekie, chairman of the appeal committee, at a champagne supper at Batsford Park, the last in a series of money-raising events in aid of the appeal. He described the appeal's success as "fantastic." He said: "We had 15 months in which to produce this sum and we have done in just over seven, which is indicative of the affection in which Moreton Hospital is held locally. he thanked everyone who had contributed and said the day hospital project would now go ahead. Three preliminary meetings had already been held. However, Dr Reekie appealed to the public to go on supporting functions to be held in aid of the appeal.
