100 Years Ago May 16, 1908 THE children attending Longborough Church School gave the usual annual school concert to a crowded and appreciative audience on Friday and Saturday. The reason for giving it so late this year was on account of epidemics of fever and measles throughout the village. The children have been handicapped for several months because of this. Very great credit must be given to them for the excellence of their performances, which evoked great praise from a most attentive gathering of people and the way in which every part of the programme was received left no doubt as to whether or not the efforts of the children to give satisfaction were successful. They all did excellently and performed their individual parts to perfection.

75 Years Ago May 13, 1933 THE occasion of an archdeaconal visitation to the Stow-on-the-Wold deanery was an event of particular interest on Friday last as it was the first visitation to the deanery of the Archdeacon Canon F W Sears (rector of Leckhampton) and was attended by the Rev E T Murray (rector of Bourton-on-the-Hill) for the first time in his new capacity of rural dean. To mark the occasion, the Rev E T Murray entertained the large company of clergy and churchwardens to luncheon at the Talbot Hotel following the ceremony at the parish church of Stow-on-the-Wold. The luncheon gave the churchwardens of the deanery a splendid chance for getting to know each other and it was interesting to note in the company the number of prominent Cotswold sportsmen who take an active part in the life of the church.

30 Years Ago May 18, 1978 MORE council houses in small villages could save village schools from closing, Bourton-on-the-Water NFU was told at its meeting. Gloucestershire NFU headquarters recently expressed concern about the closure of village schools and was supported by the Bourton branch which felt that, where there was a borderline case, a village school should be given the benefit of the doubt. Mr M H Oughton referred to the district council's policy of not building in the small villages and said he felt they ought to get a few of the houses being built at Moreton, Bourton and other larger centres. Mr Tony Williams commented: "The trouble then is finding the people to live in them," but Mr Oughton said he did not think this was a problem.
