100 Years Ago May 30, 1908 THE annual general meeting of shareholders of the Moreton-in-Marsh Sanitary Laundry was held on Thursday morning. Mr A Rushout (chairman) presided. The director's report showed a considerable falling off in fine work done during the year. Heavy expenses had to be carried in meeting the requirements of H M Inspector of Factories and making necessary alterations; also certain work was carried out in connection with the public sewage disposal the whole of the company's water was drained from their well for which no compensation was obtained. While the whole of the plant and buildings and machinery have been kept in repair, the directors regret that no dividend can be paid.
75 Years Ago May 27, 1933 Several of the English Test cricketers, recently returned from Australia, will play in he Earl of Wemyss' 11 which is to meet Gloucestershire Cricket Club at Stanway on Sunday, June 18. The match is to be a time limit event, commencing at noon, and the proceeds are to be devoted to Winchcombe District Hospital and Cheltenham General Hospital. The following famous cricketers have promised to appear: D R Jardine (Surrey), R E S Wyatt (Warwickshire) G O Allen (Middlesex), Sutcliffe, Leyland and Macauley (Yorkshire) and Ames (Kent). It is rarely possible to see such a distinguished gathering of cricket "lions" in the locality and given fine weather there should be a great crowd at Stanway for this unique event.
30 Years Ago May 25, 1978 The fuss over Chipping Campden's parish rate being the highest in the Cotswolds has been blown up out of all proportion, Campden town council was told at its meeting. The mayor, Mr R W Smith, said a number of letters had been received querying the 3.5p parish rate but he did not see why the parish council should feel any sense of guilt over this. The increase had been discussed at the council meeting and explained at the annual parish meeting. "There has been no secret about it at all," he said. The council decided to put an extra penny on its rate towards the long-discussed improvements to the lower part of the town hall. Adding 1p to a 2p rate was a percentage increase which could be made to sound very dramatic, but it was a perfectly legitimate move to make.
