A DREAM came true for a little boy 40 years ago when he was taken on a tour of Evesham Fire Station.

The young chap was Oliver Hutchinson, aged four, son of Mr and Mrs E Hutchinson of Middle Littleton.

The Journal of 1971 reported: “Ever since he could walk Oliver has been a compulsive dresser-upper, and in recent months his improvised uniform has been that of a fireman.

He decided he would ask for a real fireman’s uniform for Christmas, which posed problems for his parents.

“So his mother wrote to the chief fire officer at Evesham asking for pictures of the genuine article on which to model a home-made outfit.

“She also enclosed a few pictures drawn by Oliver. The request was met by a visit from sub-officer R Corbett, officer in charge at Evesham.

He spent an hour with Oliver, sharing his helmet, explaining the details of a fireman’s life and inviting him to take a tour of Evesham Station.”

Speaking to a Journal reporter, Mr Corbett said: “He’s very keen on the fire brigade.

When his mother wrote we hadn’t got any clear pictures of men in uniform, so I called on the family and took my uniform with me. I told him that any time he happened to be in Evesham he could call at the station and I’d be happy to show him around.

We are only too happy to oblige in situations like this, we like to let people know about the job we do.”
