THERE was disapppointment for a Vale rugby union team 75 years ago.

The Journal of 1936 reported: “Pershore RFC were decidedly unlucky to lose against Cainscross at home on Saturday by five points to eight – one try and a goal to two tries.

“Their pack was the heavier of the two and got the ball out of the scrum evenly against their lighter opponents, who were exceptionally fit. Cainscross scored first after about 25 minutes play, their inside three-quarter touching down by the corner flag. The try was not converted.

“The visitors’ wing forwards always appeared to be offside and many movements were foiled by Pershore before they could be developed.

“On the change of ends, Pershore commenced to play with more determination. A forward movement started by Geoff Fowler came to an end when a try seemed certain, Ken Leist being brought down a yard from the line. Harrell received the ball from the home ‘25’ and ran through eight of his opponents to score what was easily the most spectacular try seen at Pershore since the days of Grosvenor Williams. The kick, taken by Tony Lewis, was successful.

Pershore were now on the attack practically continuously and almost added another try to their total when a clever solo dribble by David Howell brought the ball near the line, but failed through lack of support from the forwards.

“Five minutes before the end Cainscross obtained their final try when their centre beat Newstead for the touch.”
