Slippery conditions led to falls at pony club event

DAMP conditions saw several falls at a meeting of Shipston Pony Club 75 years ago.

The Journal of 1936 reported: “The meeting commenced and ended with heavy showers, but for the greater part of the afternoon the sun shone brightly, and added considerably to the enjoyment of the large crowd which thronged the rails. Unfortunately, the rain had made the course slippery and there were several falls, one rider, Miss Connie Morris, having to be medically treated for an injured thigh.

“The racing was good all round and there were several popular wins.

“Mrs Bryant’s ‘Jennie Lee’ was again successful in winning the Buckle Challenge Cup, this making it her fourth consecutive win.

“The same mare led for most of the way in the Barcheston Stakes and when only a quarter of a mile from the post slipped and fell, otherwise she was a certain winner.

“An added attraction this year was the ladies’ race for a silver challenge cup given by Mr J Brotherton.

“There was a large field and the event was one of the most popular on the card.

“After the races the cups were presented to the winners by Mr J Brotherton, at the George Hotel, in the presence of a large gathering.”
