100 Years Ago May 27, 1911 The experience of the Ettington labourer who was on Saturday fined 7s 6d, including costs, at Shipston-on-Stour Petty Sessions for being drunk while in charge of a horse, should prove a warning to others who may fall a victim to the seductive charms of a clay pipe and twist tobacco. There is no reasonable doubt that the unfortunate carter appeared to be suffering from an undue indulgence in alcohol, for he was refused drink at a local public house. He had, however, been smoking twist in a new clay pipe and this combination was too much for him. We are not inclined to disbelieve him and are quite sure it would be too much for us. The moral is obvious: Do not smoke twist in a new clay pipe, but if you must have the combination of twist and clay, get someone else to mature your pipe for you.

75 Years Ago May 23, 1936 A meeting of Stow-on-the-Wold Parish Council was held at St Edward’s Hall on Tuesday evening. Street lighting was fully discussed and it was decided that in addition to the present lights, four additional lamps should be erected, one between Young’s Garage and the first road to Broadwell on the Fosse Way, one at the end of Geroge Alley on the Fosse Way, one on the Fosse Way near the cemetery main gate, and one in Union Street near the entrance to the Public Assistance Institution. The clerk was directed to ascertain from the S W and S Electric Power Company the cost of erection, and also the charge for lighting to March 31 next. A letter from the North Cotswold Rural District Council was read, enclosing copy specification and plan for the provision of a public convenience in the King’s Arms yard.

40 Years Ago May 27, 1971 There was praise for the people of Chipping Campden at Monday’s annual meeting of the parish council. The chairman, Mr L J Brodie, said he was pleased to see the way preparations were going ready for next month’s judging in the Bledisloe Cup tidy village competition. “I think everyone is playing a part,” he said. “Lots of jobs are being done that I haven’t seen done before. It is looking quite nice.” He added that there were some building sites he would like to see tidied up and called for an all-out effort so the cup could be won again. The meeting decided to spend £43.98 on six signs to be erected in the Campden area for footpaths and bridleways. The clerk, Mr F A Holland, said that at a previous meeting it was decided to allocate £25 a year on signs until enough were provided. As none were bought last year the council was entitled to spend up to £50, he said.
