Ban on special tyres ‘obviated inclusion of freakish obstacles’

Cotswold and Evesham competitors put up creditable performances in the Colmore Cup annual motorcycle and cycle car open trial over a rugged Cotswold course 75 years ago.

The Journal of 1935 reported: “A first class award was gained by A R Foster, of Stow-on-the-Wold, (46 New Imperial) who lost only 10 marks; a second class award by T Robbins, of Evesham (250 Triumph), who lost 14 marks; and a third class award by A R Taylor, Shipston-on-Stour (742 Raleigh Van), who lost 26 points.

“For the first time in the history of the trial, organisers made the bold experiment of prohibiting the use of the competition type of tyres which have been so much in vogue in these events.

“The idea was to obviate the inclusion of freakish obstacles and so render the points of interest more accessible to the public.

“The experiment was justified and had the effect of requiring a high standard of riding.

“The Colmore Cup for the best performance of the day was picked up by L Heath (497 Ariel) who lost no marks, while R C Cotterell (497 Ariel) also got through without dropping a point.

“In addition to winning the Colmore Trophy for the best solo performance was also in the winning team of three riders.”
