The area worst hit by a disastrous storm 20 years ago was Stow Hill on the Fosseway out of Stow towards Bourton.
The Journal of 1990 reported: “Following the storm, the avenue of beech trees on either side of the road has been devastated, estimates of between 20 and 30 large trees blown down during the gale force winds of Thursday. The hill was shut to traffic before 2pm and was not opened until 8pm on Friday.
“During the storm four or five lorries, several cars and a police car were trapped by trees falling across the hill, one lorry carrying car parts from Swindon being struck across the main part of the lorry by a huge tree trunk, only a few inches behind the cab. Also at Stow several other trees came down in the town including one near the fountain traffic lights, fences were damaged and damage was caused to houses.
“It was a similar story at Bourton, most of the village along with many others in the Cotswolds being without electricity for much of the afternoon and evening.
“Stanway Hill was blocked when a tree fell across the road, and many minor roads had trees across them. At Moreton fences were blown down as well as some trees, and the electricity supply was intermittent.”
